Liveable Community, MERC, and Minnesota Real ID

Creating a “Liveable Community”

A “Liveable” Community is safe and secure, has affordable and appropriate housing, diverse transportation options, and supportive community features and services.  In the City for Good, AARP Minnesota, and Family Service Rochester hosted AARP’s Director of Liveable Communities who presented information on “Liveable” cities and neighborhoods on.  I attended this forum on September 27 and learned how other cities developed “liveability” initiatives.   As Rochester and Olmsted County grows, it is important to remember that neighborhoods and downtown must be “liveable” for all ages. I agree with our local efforts spearheaded by In the City for Good and Family Services Rochester to create initiatives that will enhance the life for all ages in the County.  If you would like to know more about Liveable Communities you can contact David Beal at Family Services Rochester.

Minnesota Energy Resources Corporation

Minnesota Energy Resources Corporation (MERC) appealed the valuation for assessment for the years 2008-2012.  The Minnesota Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that lowered MERC’s valuation by 6.5% or about $45 Million.  Olmsted County will be impacted by this because 21% (which amounts to about $144,000) of the overall estimated market value of MERC is within Olmsted County.
